Fellow Travellers Volume 2

Fellowship & Solidarity

Artistic activism, institutional responsibility, and safe spaces for persecuted voices

How can cultural institutions take a stand in times of multiple crises and serve as safe havens for persecuted artists? The volume Fellowship & Solidarity in the Fellow Travellers publication series documents the exhibitions The Voice of Women Is the Voice of Freedom (Khanda Hameed and Nabaz Samad) and Unfamiliar Ceilings (Amna Elamin), which were created in 2024 and 2025 as part of Fellow Travellers.

The artists and activists from Kurdistan and Sudan featured in the book find themselves in situations marked by instability, political persecution, and displacement. Their works provide compelling insights into their living conditions and their dedication to freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Their artistic projects and the work they created during their artist residencies at the ZKM are documented here and supplemented with personal contributions. The publication also includes reflections on the role of cultural institutions in times of crisis and insights into the ZKM's international collaboration with the organization Artists at Risk (AR).
